Ahu Tongariki at sunrise
Sunrise behind fifteen moai at Ahu Tongariki is the island’s most iconic dawn shot—worth the early alarm once in your trip.
Even though Ahu Tongariki is located on the opposite side of the island from Hanga Roa, many go there to see the sun rising behind the monument. For this you may either rent a car and go by yourself or ask for it to be part of a private tour.

The archaeological area is managed as a national park: you need a valid park ticket and (except for a few coastal sites) must follow current Parque Nacional Rapa Nui rules, including guide requirements where they apply. Arrive well before sunrise — driving in the dark on island roads takes longer than you expect, and parking fills up on clear mornings.
Dress in layers, bring a torch for the walk from the parking area, and respect ropes and paths — avoid climbing on the moai or ahu platforms.
