Tahai at sunset

Tahai’s moai silhouettes against the western sky are minutes from central Hanga Roa—ideal when you want a dramatic photo without a long drive after a park day.

Being comfortably located in the outskirts of the Hanga Roa village, Tahai offers a nice opportunity for shooting sunset photos with moai statues. The area is past the cementary, 1 km to the north of the town center. Walking along the coast it'll be impossible to miss.

The whole Tahai complex was restored in 1974 by American archaeologist William Mulloy, who lies buried there with his wife.

The area has three ahu with 1, 1 and 5 moai statues respectively. Here stands the only moai statue which has had its eyes restored. There is also a house that might have been inspired from the stone houses of the Orongo stone village. This house is not ancient though, but was invented by William Mulloy when he restored the area.
